Hair and Beauty - Options 2026
Hair & Beauty
Course Specification: VTCT Level 1/2 Technical Award in the Study of Hair and Beauty
Course contact: T Lester lester.t.m@whiteroseacademies.org or Ms Connolly Escobar.N@whiteroseacademies.org
Course Description:
Learners will explore design skills and techniques used within the hair and beauty sector to develop their skills in planning, carrying out research and presenting design brief ideas. They will also explore the business aspect of the hair and beauty sector and have the opportunity to investigate the principles of marketing and how entrepreneurship supports the hair and beauty sector, including how to select and design promotional activities and materials.
This course is now delivered at Leeds City Academy.
What will I learn?
The Award consists of three mandatory units:
- Business and entrepreneurship in the Hair and Beauty sector
- Anatomy, physiology and cosmetic science
- Design in the Hair and Beauty sector.
How will I be assessed?
The three units are not individually assessed. Instead, learners must achieve a pass in both an external written exam and a synoptic written assignment. The marks from these two assessments will be combined, and the total will determine the overall level and grade of achievement; this approach ensures that a wide range of abilities is recognised and rewarded. Although there is no practical element formally assessed within the course, we will implement a practical session every two weeks to support learners in developing the applied skills needed to complement their theoretical understanding.
Future Opportunities
The VTCT Level 1/2 Technical Award in the Study of Hair and Beauty is aimed at learners aged 14-16 who have an interest in developing a broad understanding of the hairdressing and beauty therapy sector and related industries, including retail, leisure, manufacturing and other personal care services.
