Course Description: The Award gives students the opportunity to develop sector-specific knowledge and skills in a practical learning environment. Students will explore growth and development, health services and explore health and social care case studies.

What will I learn?

Component 1: Human lifespan development. Learners will explore different aspects of growth and development and the factors that can affect this across the life stages. They will explore the different events that can impact on individuals’ physical, intellectual, emotional and social (PIES) development and how individuals cope with and are supported through changes caused by life events.

Component 2: Health and social care services and values. Learners will explore health and social care services and how they meet the needs of service users. They will also study the skills, attributes and values required when giving care.

Component 3: Health and well-being (exam). Learners will explore the factors that affect health and wellbeing, learning about physiological and lifestyle indicators, and person-centred approaches to make recommendations to improve an individual’s health and wellbeing.

External  - Exam

Component 1: Human lifespan development. Students will choose a celebrity and write about their life, considering how key events have impacted upon their growth and development. Students will also research how a significant life event can impact people’s growth and development in different ways. This coursework will be completed in school and go towards the student’s final grade.

 

Component 2: Health and social care services and values. Students will research the health and social care needs of two individuals and consider how health and social care services can support them. They will also take part in role play activities where they will demonstrate the core health and social care values. This coursework will be completed in school and go towards the student’s final grade.

 

Component 3: Health and well-being (exam). Students will sit a 2-hour exam. They will be provided with case study information about an individual and will then answer a series of questions about the individual’s growth and development. Students will then go on to write a health and social care action plan for the individual and evaluate their reasoning for this plan. Results from this exam go towards the student’s final grade.

 Future Opportunities and Careers

The knowledge and skills gained in health and social care are useful for post-16 courses such as health and social care, childcare, sociology, psychology, public service and science.

The health and social care course develops students wider understanding of people and for this reason, it is useful in a wide range of careers that involve working with people in various contexts. Obvious careers that health and social care prepare students for are midwifery, nursing, dentistry, healthcare, social work and mental health work. 

Further Information There are no tiers for the health and social care exam, all students will sit the same paper. Health and social care is a vocational course, therefore students will be assessed in a variety of ways that will include written as well as practical work.
