Step Up Day
Understanding the world we live in.
On Tuesday 6th March we had our second ‘Step up Day’ at Leeds City Academy, where students came off normal timetabled lessons to participate in activities to promote wider understanding of the world in which we live.
Year 7 students spent time working with a company called ‘Solutions for the Planet’ where they learnt about sustainability and creating an eco-friendly planet. The students approached these topics in a very mature manner, listening to the company talk about food waste, plastics in our ocean and many other modern problems. They then had to select ‘their own problem’ in groups to focus on and choose solutions for and the presented their ideas to the whole of Year 7.
Year 8 students visited Leeds City College to participate in taster session for different courses and careers options. They enjoyed seeing the computer technology robot in action and trying out new building skills.
Year 9 students visited Leeds University, touring the facilities and talking about what University could offer them in the future.
Year 10 participated in workshops around the Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural aspects of our society and had a session with a Company called Positively Mad who spoke about how you learn and how to maximise the different ways of learning.
Year 11 participated in mindfulness and wellbeing workshops, yoga and martial arts; these are some useful techniques to wind down from the stress of revision.
Mr Pollard commented: "The students were really engaged with the whole day and presented themselves wonderfully to the external visitors. My highlights include Year 7 planning solutions to big challenges, Year 10 staying so focused when mapping out careers and Year 11 being so captivated by yoga!"
