Technology Year 7 Curriculum

Assignment 1

 

At Leeds City Academy, students will be studying on a rotation system in Year 7 allowing them all to experience the core areas of the subject, including Graphics, Resistant Materials and Food Preparation and Nutrition.

 

Core skills include: drawing skills, (rendering, shading, blending,) researching products, product analysis and technical knowledge.

 

Assignment 1 will be a practical task.
The ‘Introduction to Design Technology’ assignment aims to develop students’ technical drawing skills. It asks students to demonstrate their research skills to retrieve information about products, materials, manufacturing processes and environmental issues. Independent and homework tasks will form an integral part of the assignment and assessment process. The first rotation project will be Graphics and students will create a pop-up book for nursery children. Students will be assessed and their targets will be generated based on this grade.

 

Assignment 2

 

Assignment 2 will be a practical/ speaking and listening task.
The students’ second rotational project will be Food Preparation and Nutrition. Focus areas will include exploration of Health & Safety, sensory testing and food hygiene. They will have the opportunity to prepare and cook a range of dishes.

 

Core skills include: testing and evaluating products; providing verbal feedback about products; listening to third party comments and responding to feedback and verbalising suggested improvements.

 

Students will be assessed and their achievement levels used for the spring progress report.

 

Assignment 3

 

Assignment 3 will include an extended writing task.
During Assignment 3, Resistant Materials, students will learn about safe working practice in a workshop and be taught to use a range of hand tools safely and effectively. They will have the opportunity to demonstrate their skills when they design and make a wooden jewelry box.

 

Core skills include: testing and evaluating products; planning practical manufacture and writing instructions and technical knowledge.

 

At the end of Assignment 3 students will complete an end of year exam which will check their understanding of the content covered throughout the school year. Students will be assessed and their achievement levels used for the summer progress report.
