Initial Results Analysis 2023-24
Leeds City Academy educates students from a wide range of diverse backgrounds. To contextualize the GCSE results, the unique characteristics and backgrounds of the school and its students are detailed below. The following information is presented in the same format as the IDSR.
- Outstanding Overall Performance: With a Progress 8 (P8) value of +0.54, our students are significantly above the national average, placing them in the top 21st percentile. In EBacc qualifications, a P8 of +0.61 places our students in the top 16th percentile, thanks to strong results in Heritage Languages, English, and Maths.
- Maths Achievements:
- o 4+ increased by 11.7%
- o 5+ increased by 9.4%
- o 7+ increased by 4.5%
- o P8 increased by +0.34
These improvements have greatly impacted overall school performance, as Maths counts double towards A8 and P8. English also showed gains with a 5+ increase of 2.2%, a 7+ increase of 7.6%, and a P8 increase of 0.36, placing the department in the top 18% nationally. Science saw a 7+ increase of 3.1% and an Subject Progress Index (SPI) increase of 0.08, placing it in the top 37% for value added.
- English Literature and Language: Both have positive SPI values of +0.51 and +0.63, respectively, which are over half a grade higher than the national average, particularly impressive given that 73.2% of our students do not have English as their first language.
- Student Group Performance:
- o PP and Non-PP students have shown increased attainment, with improvements of 2.24 and 2.94, respectively, compared to 2022-23.
- o PP students’ P8 increased by +0.95 over the past two years.
- o SEND students’ P8 increased by almost half a grade over the past two years, despite a slight drop in attainment.
- o EAL students, who make up 73.2% of Year 11, achieved a high P8 of +0.81 and an A8 of 39.96.
- o Both male and female students showed increased attainment and progress, with notable increases in males (A8 +4.99) and females (A8 +1.05).
- o High Prior Attainers (HPA) saw significant progress and attainment, with an A8 increase of +17.18 and a P8 of +1.29.
- Subject Performance:
- o Heritage Languages: Average grade of 7.06.
- o Spanish: 13.6% rise in 7+ grades, 22.3% increase in 5+ grades, 14.4% improvement in 4+ grades, average grade of 5.0, and SPI of 2.00, placing it in the top 1% nationally.
- o Sport: Consistently high SPI value of 1.86.
- o Health and Social Care, and Photography: Positive SPI values of 1.88 and 0.8, respectively.
- o Geography: Improved grades in all key areas, with an SPI value of 0.60, placing it in the top 30% for value added.
- Note: Further updates to the Progress 8 data will be made once the full national dataset is recalibrated.

The school provides education to students from some of the most deprived areas in the city and the country (Index of Multiple Deprivation IMD decile 1 to 5, indicating the most deprived areas).
Many of the demographics remain similar to last year:
- The percentage of families eligible for Free School Meals (FSM) (in receipt of Credit including Universal Credit, earning below £7,400) has increased to 57.3% from 53% last year, significantly higher than the national and regional averages.
- The percentage of students identified as English as an Additional Language (EAL) in Year 11 has risen to 73.2% from 71% the previous year.
- The percentage of students identified as having Special Educational Needs (SEN) in Year 11 has decreased from the previous year and is below the regional and national figures.
- The percentage of Year 11 students who are Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller (GRT) remains high and is significantly above the regional and national figures.
